Scottsdale Christian Academy
Scottsdale, AZ

After master planning the campus and providing several small additions and remodelling, this specialty classroom and performance building was created to replace a preschool which was moved off of the main campus.

Besides traditional classrooms, this building houses performance and practice spaces for music and drama.  The primary interior teaching/performance space is designed to be used for a wide range of performance arts.  However, because the school did not have the resources to create a traditional auditorium space, the interior performance space was designed to open to the exterior and a portion of the walkway becomes the outdoor stage.  In front of that stage is a support structure for lighting and sound.  This solution has proved invaluable and is utilized regularly both during school and for evening performances.

Paul Winslow, FAIA, was the architect of record and worked closely with the school staff to make sure the additional spaces would meet the needs for teaching and performing arts. He also led the programming process, the design, and oversaw the construction administration while working at Orcutt/Winslow.
