Punahou Middle School - School Planning
HONOLULU, HI

One of the most prestigious private schools in the country, they were determined to re-think their middle school program on their existing campus.  After initial facilitated sessions, with board members, teachers and parents, the intent to provide flexible applied learning spaces as an integral part of the new facilities. Because the site selected for the new replacement campus, was on a significant slope, the concept of creating stand alone common spaces that would be located between houses, the anticipated use would provide a distinct experience. This departure from traditional learning spaces was then incorporated into the final design, with a wall to the exterior operable to take advantage of the climate. The new Middle School was designed to these criteria.

Paul Winslow, FAIA, led the design development, and was the project architect while working at Orcutt/Winslow.
