National City Trail System

Around the core of this Southern California City, the creation of a pedestrian trail that would also allow for exercise, was the goal of this plan. With a rather compact geographic area, that goes from the ocean and shipping docks, to the commercial core, the trail was designed to tie the disparate elements together. It incorporated elements relating to the variety of ethnic communities, focused on historic elements and took advantage of the biodiversity of the area. It included periodic exercise elements and focus points looking at historic sites. Presentation focus elements were designed to be constructed by the local high school through their educational programs.

Paul Winslow, FAIA, led the design development, and was the project architect while working at Orcutt/Winslow.
