Millilani Middle School - Educational Planning
Millilani, HI

This concept was developed over a series of meetings with district educators and planners, community members and architectural staff, to create the educational strategy. This was one of the first new schools to be programmed and designed as a next generation school in the State of Hawaii, this school was planned around the concept of transitioning from dependent to independent learners. The planning focused on the “house concept”, but with the specific need or unassigned wet and dry laboratory space in each house. The strategy developed was focused on having the independent learners, as they become more effective and responsible, they would be able to progress to the “Exploritorium” space in the center of the campus. The special focus areas, art, music, science lab, home economics, industrial arts and similar areas would surround this special space. These special area teachers could then be a resource for students with special projects.

Paul Winslow, FAIA, led the design development, and was the project architect while working at Orcutt/Winslow.
