city of surprise master plan
Surprise Heritage District
A true mixed use project, this included 70,000 sf of City Human Resources and Multi-generation Center, 300 apartment units50,000 sf of retail and another 50,000 sf of office and live-work units. Also projected was a 120 room hotel. Designed to relate to the original settlers in the city, who were of Mexican decent, the complex was designed around a series of plazas or zocalos that could serve as community gathering spots and house events or art shows and farmer’s markets. To address the neighborhood residents, a ceremonial entry was created as the main axis of the project and leads to a central plaza and sculptural element. From the visitor’s side, the retail and restaurants frame entry to these same plazas. With a small amphitheater for performance or movies in the park and support for pop-up tents for community focused or informal retail vendors were accommodated.
